Some RRs and cassette machines don't have speed control or cannot be easily modified for it, so why not use them inline with FX which will have some delay already involved?
Set them in monitor so that you hear the tape and not the input. Use a mixer so that both the instrument output and the tape deck output go to the tape input. If it's an old machine it might add some phase issues and other interesting stuff.
